In flipped learning, students learn the material at home before class, and then use class time to apply what they've learned through discussion and activities. According to a survey from Faculty Focus (2018), 89% of instructors who used the flipped classrooms led to better student retention, understanding of material, and higher exam scores.
Flipped learning is an educational strategy that reverses the traditional learning model by delivering instructional content, typically online, outside of the classroom. Instead of using class time for direct instruction, students first encounter new material at home through pre-recorded video lectures, reading assignments, or other digital resources. This initial exposure allows students to learn at their own pace, pausing or revisiting the content as needed to ensure understanding.
Once students arrive in the classroom, the focus shifts from passive learning to active application. Class time is dedicated to engaging in deeper learning activities such as group discussions, problem-solving exercises, case studies, and hands-on projects. This allows teachers to provide more targeted support, address individual questions, and facilitate collaborative learning experiences.
The flipped learning model is designed to promote a more student-centered approach, encouraging learners to take responsibility for their education while maximizing the effectiveness of in-class time. By moving the basic learning phase outside the classroom, students come to class prepared to apply concepts, think critically, and engage in higher-order thinking tasks under the guidance of their teacher. This approach has been shown to enhance student engagement, improve comprehension, and allow for more personalized instruction.
